As the world is slowly opening back up and we’re embracing the “new normal,” many of us are finding ourselves uncertain about a lot of areas of our life and with a lot of questions about how to help our dogs transition as we go back to the office.
How do I get up early enough to have breakfast AND commute to work?
Do I really have to get dressed every day of the week?
And what in the world do I do with my dog?!
Feeling a little bit worried about all the adjustments as you head back into the office is completely normal – for both you and your pet.
Just like us, dogs can experience anxiety and feelings of uneasiness. But there are things we can do to help them through any major transition.
Here are a few tips to help your pet transition as you go back to the office and get used to this “new normal”:
Quality > Quantity.
It’s normal to feel sad that the amount of time spent with your pet is inevitably going to decrease as you head back into the office. But as in most cases, remember that quality time is more important than quantity. Try to focus on spending quality time with your pet when you can. Make sure to play games with him or take him on a walk before you head to work and when you come home so that he knows he’s loved and he can feel safe and secure knowing you’re coming back home soon!
Routine is your new best friend.
Where there used to be spontaneity and improvisation – there will now be a newfound focus on structure and systems. Help your dog to adjust to his new routine even before you go back to work (if you have the time) so there’s not too many changes happening all at once. If you’re already back to work – don’t worry, it’s not too late to implement a routine now to help your pup adjust. Take it day by day and before you know it, you’ll forget what you ever did before it!
Interactive toys and games.
While you’re going to be heading into a busy day at work, your pup doesn’t always have that many things to check off his to-do list and a day without his best friend might get lonely (and a bit boring). Don’t forget to always leave him easy access to some interactive toys and games, and maybe even get him a special new toy to help him ease into your first day back.
Doggy daycare.
Doggy daycare is a great option to keep your dog from feeling bored and anxious while you’re at work all day. Look for a daycare option in your area to fill his days with some fun and new activities! Doggy daycare not only keeps your dog occupied, but it also helps to give him the tools to ease his separation anxiety and uneasiness through other inevitable life transitions.
